Food at the grocery store is already expensive enough and you wouldn’t think that the cashier at the supermarket would cost you more money that the items itself. Right? Wrong!! That’s because a HelpSaveMyDollars.com editor experienced just that at a popular grocery store chain whose name won’t be mentioned in this article. Anyway, when our editor was describing this story, we felt it was important to post this on the site to make sure this does not happen to others. Our editor was shopping normally in the grocery store and when he went to pay for the items, the cashier inadvertently scanned the pineapple our editor purchased twice! The pineapple was $2.99 but it showed up on the screen by the register as $5.98. Thankfully, our editor watched the screen closely and immediately alerted the cashier of his error.
Our editor also bought olive oil, which was priced at $6.49 on the shelf, yet it was scanned at the register as $6.99. He once again alerted the cashier about this 50¢ mistake. It did not end there! Ice cream was on sale for two cartons for $6.00. Our editor purchased three ice cream cartons with the expectation that it would cost $9.00 for all three ($3.00 * 3 cartons). But, apparently some specific flavors were two for $7.00; therefore two ice creams came in at $3.00 and one scanned as $3.50, since he was purchasing one of the more expensive flavors. Being very money and saving conscious, our editor asked for the more expense ice cream (the $3.50 one) to be removed from the bill. The cashier removed the $3.00 one instead of the $3.50 one, which was his third and final mistake.
With some math, if our editor did not pay attention to the screen that read how much every item cost, and if he did not remember what the price tag read on the shelf, he would have lost a significant amount of money. He would have lost $3.00 for the extra “imaginary” pineapple, 50¢ on the olive oil, and another 50¢ for the deceiving sale on the ice cream. That’s $4.00 that would have been spent on nothing—a complete waste of money!! This brings us to the main point of this article: ALWAYS review your receipt or look at the monitor that’s usually next to the register that shows you how much all of your items cost.
If you see something that’s entirely wrong or that just doesn’t seem right, don’t hesitate to ask the cashier. Remember, it’s your money and only you are responsible for keeping it rather than getting financially penalized for someone else’s mistakes.
